FAQs Concerning AHSAA Eligibility at St. Michael Catholic HS

Q: If I have a current 8th grade student attending Christ the King or St. Patrick and he/she attends McGill-Toolen Catholic as a 9th grader for the 2015-16 school year, will he/she be eligible at St. Michael if he/she transfers when the school opens in August  2016?

A: Yes. If your child attends McGill-Toolen as a 9th grader and you live in Baldwin County, your child will be able to transfer to St. Michael for the beginning of the 2016-17 school year as a 10th grader under the Home School Rule.

Q: If I have a current 7th grade student attending Christ the King or St. Patrick and he/she attends McGill-Toolen Catholic as a 9th grader for the 2016-17 school year, is there anyway he/she can be eligible for athletic participation at McGill-Toolen as a 9th grader?

A: Yes. If your child resides in Baldwin County and he/she will attend McGill-Toolen as a 9th grader in 2016-17, he/she must attend one of the following schools as an 8th grader for the 2015-16 school year: Corpus Christi, Little Flower, Most Pure Heart of Mary, St. Dominic, St. Mary, St. Ignatius, St. Pius X.

Q: If my child attends Christ the King or St. Patrick, will he/she be eligible at the public school or private school where I live?

A: No. In the past, students from Christ the King or St. Patrick could be eligible at McGill-Toolen, the public school, or private school where your child resides. They were eligible at McGill-Toolen because Christ the King and St. Patrick were feeder schools. They were eligible at the public school or private school where your child resides because of the Home Rule. Once St. Michael opens in August 2016, your child will not be eligible anywhere but St. Michael because of Overlapping School Zone Rule.

Q: If my child attends Christ the King or St. Patrick as 7th or 8th grader in the 2016-17 school year and if he/she will attend McGill-Toolen in the 9th grade, will he/she be eligible to participate in McGill-Toolen’s athletic program as a 7th & 8th grader?

A: No. Once St. Michael opens during the 2016-17 school year, Christ the King and St. Patrick students will be able to participate with St. Michael only.

Q: My child attends St. Benedict. What eligibility rules apply to him/her?

A: Currently, St. Benedict is not a member of the AHSAA; therefore, students entering the 9th grade are eligible at any high school where they reside. This will include St. Michael. However, 7th & 8th graders can not participate for St. Michael unless St. Benedict becomes a member school of the AHSAA.
